2008 Château d’Oupia Les Heretiques

Château d’Oupia in Minervois has been one of our favorite producers for many years now, and their Les Heretiques bottling is an everyday staple here at Gang Central. A blend of old-vine Carignane and Syrah, it’s a perennial QPR All-Star, but strangely, I had yet to taste the current model. I happened upon some on the shelf at Western Market in Ferndale a few days ago and decided to rectify that situation. Here are my impressions:

2008 Château d’Oupia Les Heretiques Vin de Pays de Herault, 12.5% alc., $9.99: Deep, dark color, practically opaque; black plum, black berry and a touch of black olive on the nose, turning rich and fairly ripe in the mouth. Full bodied, with decent structure and length; you can age this for a few years or drink it tonight with anything from burgers and pizza to steaks and hearty stews. I like the black olive note that so many of d’Oupia’s wines have shown in the past, but seem to have less of these days. This vintage maintains the solid Les Heretiques track record for providing enjoyable everyday drinking at a fair price. Find this wine
