Alan Kerr’s May 15th, 2010, Vintage’s Release – Tasting Notes

The wines of Burgundy are the principal feature of this release and in readiness for the approach of warmer summer months; there are several Rose wines from various regions around the globe available too. I also tasted a couple of wines from Bordeaux that are really tasty and will reward the patient collector. Do read on.

169193 ROUX PERE ET FILS CLOS DES MOLLEPIERRES RULLY 2007 $23.95
A spicy wine that delivers notes of almond, pear, lots of bright and lively citric acidity and a touch of sour plum. The aromas carry through to the palate and are joined by notes of wet stone and spicy oak. A nice wine, it just needs a little time to allow the oak notes to integrate. Find this wine

732917 LOUIS JADOT POUILLY FUISSE 2008 $32.95
Here is an enticing nose of white flowers, banana peel, white peach, mineral and melon. There is a solid streak of citrus on the palate that brings all the fruit and mineral flavours together. The balance is well done, but the finish pales too soon for my take. Find this wine

169805 WILLIAM FEVRE CHABLIS 1er CRU 2007 $29.95
Chablis wines rarely disappoint and this wine is a textbook example of what this region can produce. It starts out emitting aromas of earthy mineral, wet potato peelings, rose petal, lime zest and wet stone. Green apple is the principal fruit on both the nose and palate and citric acids blend well. Find this wine

001149 MAISON CHAMPY SIGNATURE PINOT NOIR, BOURGOGNE 2006 $18.95
Quite an earthy driven nose supported by layers of black cherry, leather and plum. It has decent structure, plenty of guts and a solid layer of fruit. A few hours in a decanter will help soften the aggressiveness of the tannins. The plumy fruit is ripe and the acids are well focused. Find this wine

981548 DOMAINE DANIEL RION ET FILS LES GRANDES VIGNES NUITS-ST-GEORGES 2007 $44.95
Round and robust, this wine is loaded with aromas of fresh cut flowers, plum, blackberry, salty licorice and Middle Eastern spice. The mouth feel is smooth and rich with a glycerin texture that adds just a note of sweetness from the ripe dark fruit. It has the right amount of oak, on the finish with plenty of juicy fruit and a peppery kick of spice. Find this wine

169789 BOUCHARD PERE ET FILS LES LAVIERES SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE 1er CRU 2007 $39.95
A terrior driven wine with lovely notes of sour black cherry, mushroom and a barnyard after a rainstorm. The palate has layers of dark fruit, well integrated oak and gentle tannins. Tasty now, but potential to age for a year or two and only get better. Find this wine

166181 DOMAINE BESANCENOT BRESSANDES BEAUNE 1er CRU 2006 $31.95
A fleshy fruit forward wine that intrigues with side notes of green tea, cola, thyme and anise. The sweet red fruit and dried cranberry flavours are halted by an unyielding barrier of tannin. Clearly a wine to lie to rest and re discover in two to three years when, by then, it should be really tasty. Find this wine

171405 MAISON CHAMPY POMMARD 2007 $49.95
A tight wine showing hints of floral aromas with both black and red fruit notes in support. It shows a decent level of fruit on the palate, dark chocolate tannins are evident as is an astringent note of clove. Overall it is well balanced, chunky perhaps, but the finish has great length and the wine has good potential to please once the tannins have eased up a little. Find this wine

160689 DOMAINE THENARD LES BOIS CHEVAUX GIVRY 1er CRU 2006 $24.95
The nose has a dusty “old fruit” note supported by strains of anise, spice box, dried mint and beet. On the palate, the fruit, cherry, strawberry and raspberry, is lively and fresh. Worth trying at the price. Find this wine

159210 DUFOULEUR FRERES BOURGOGNE HAUTES COTES DE NUITS 2006 $21.95
A spicy mix of allspice berry and cinnamon, with dried cranberry and cherry leading to a red fruit focused palate of rhubarb and raspberry. Find this wine

The “Pretty in Pink” wines

117861 FEATHERSTONE ESTATE ROSE 2009 Niagara Peninsula, Ontario $14.95
A good measure of minerality, sweet berry aromas and a touch of anise. The palate is clean, has a fleshy plum note and just a touch of sweetness that is balanced by the acidity. Find this wine

559088 MALIVOIRE LADYBUG ROSE 2009 Niagara Escarpment, Ontario $15.95
Red fruit, cranberry and raspberry blend with mineral and metallic notes. The palate has great structure delivering much bang for the buck. The fruit is lively; the acids are fresh and there is just a touch of upfront sweetness. Find this wine

053421 FIELDING ESTATE ROSE 2009 Niagara Peninsula, Ontario $15.95
A wine showing some dark fruit notes along with strawberry and rhubarb. It carries a spicy layer of red fruit on the palate. Find this wine

319368 CHATEAU D AQUERIA ROSE TAVEL 2009 Rhône, France $18.95
Deep and concentrated, the aromas feature rose petals, red fruit, chalk and mineral. It is quite full bodied, has superb balance, great red fruit flavours and a fabulous texture. Find this wine

319392 CHATEAU LA TOUR DE L EVEQUE ROSE 2009 Côtes de Provence, France, $18.95
A nice wine showing all the expected mineral and red berry flavours, but the acidity level is a touch low for me. It pushes the wine towards being cloying and flabby. All the wines are tasted at room temperature. Perhaps chilling might be beneficial. Find this wine

119529 CHATEAU LA CROIX DE QUEYNAC BORDEAUX ROSE 2009 Bordeaux, France $13.95
The aromas of redcurrant, red cherry and plum are pleasant; it has a dry, but fat texture on the palate. Find this wine

167221 CITRA PALIO MONTEPULCIANO D ABRUZZO CERASUOLO 2009 Abruzzo, Italy $13.95
Made with Abruzzo’s Montepulciano grape, the nose shows lots of cherry, bitter servile orange and treacle aromas. It carries a layer of sweetness on the palate, but the vibrant acidity makes it a great summer sipper. Find this wine

120220 FOLIE A DEUX MENAGE A TROIS ROSE 2009 California $17.95
A glow in the dark neon hot-pink wine that start off well with nice fruit and floral aromas, but the palate is sweet, syrupy and carries a medicinal finish. Find this wine

Other wines tasted

060467 WINE BY JOE REALLY GOOD PINOT NOIR 2007 Oregon $23.95
Funky with lots of cut grass, dust and cardboard. There are underlying notes of strawberry, plum and red fruit that carry on to the palate. Lots of red fruit acids on the finish. Find this wine

943472 SILVER OAK CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005 Alexander Valley, Sonoma County $84.95
Dark and inky, full of cassis, blackberry, slate and sweet vanilla laden toasty oak aromas. The palate is very ripe, the oak is integrating nicely and the fruit is seamless. There is tannin, it is dusty and dry, but does not offend. Find this wine

564187 CHATEAU PINDEFLEURS 2006 St-Emilion Grand Cru $23.95
A well priced blend of 90% Merlot and 5% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that is really tightly wound and tough to get into right now. It eventually releases some blackcurrant, mocha and black tea aromas, but they needed much coaxing. Its palate doesn’t show much better, the fruit is buried beneath the tannins, but with time it should prove to be worth the wait. My only concern is the lack of acidity, but those tasters all around me all stated my concerns are groundless. Find

564179 CHATEAU PIPEAU 2006 St-Emilion Grand Cru $29.00
Having several older bottles of this wine, all of which I paid more than $29.00; I was excited to taste the 06 vintage. The nose is reluctant at first to show off its goods, but after much coaxing it eventually gives out aromas of dark fruit, lead pencil, dried herb, black licorice, black raspberry and blackcurrant. The palate is spicy, ripe yet full of hard and austere tannins. I made a point of going back to this wine an couple of hours later and although the tannin is in total dominance, the under layers of fruit and other fun stuff were showing better. The acidity is perfect, the degree of oak is subtle and there is room booked in my cellar for a bottle or two. Find this wine

Cheers
